From land-based classic to online favourite
Two companies, one game: how Book of Ra went from casino floors to browser lobbies.
Novomatic: where Book of Ra began#
Book of Ra is a Novomatic game. The Austrian group, headquartered in Gumpoldskirchen, launched it in 2005 with The Winner, a land-based product line. The explorer, the mummy and the golden Book started on casino floors, and online the Classic game plays 9 lines on five reels with 10 Free Games and an expanding symbol.
A year later, in 2006, Novomatic’s German subsidiary LÖWEN ENTERTAINMENT introduced the NOVOLINE multigame concept to the German market. From those land-based roots grew a whole series of editions under the Book of Ra name, built by the same group for casino floors and online lobbies alike.
Greentube: the online home of Book of Ra#
Online, Book of Ra reaches casinos through Greentube, the NOVOMATIC Digital Gaming and Entertainment division. Greentube’s story starts in 1998 with Ski Challenge, a 3D sports game launched as Dürrschmid&Reisinger OEG. The company became Greentube Internet Entertainment Solutions AG in 2000 and joined the NOVOMATIC Group in 2010.
Today Greentube supplies classic slots, video bingo, video poker, table games, server-based gaming and social casino titles to partners around the world. For a Book of Ra player, that means the game you open in a casino lobby comes from the studio that made it, in a version built for desktop and mobile browsers.
One studio, a whole series#
Because every edition comes from the same group, the Book of Ra family stays consistent. Deluxe adds a tenth line, Deluxe 6 brings a sixth reel, Magic grows its expanding symbols, and Deluxe 10 and its Win Ways sibling move to two reel sets. The Book, the Free Games and the expanding symbol tie them together. The full line-up is compared on the Book of Ra versions page, and the original is profiled on the Book of Ra slot page.
The series also shows how the studio refines one idea over the years. The 2005 game set the formula: a Book that acts as wild and scatter, 10 Free Games, one expanding symbol. Each later edition builds on that formula with its own twist, so a player who knows Classic can sit down at any Book of Ra edition and feel at home within a few spins.
